Tiger Woods SPEAKS! Mainstream Media in a FRENZY!
Yesterday, the Tiger Woods PR people announced that on Friday, Tiger Woods will make a public statement. They were careful to say this is NOT a news conference. Rather, a statement in a controlled setting.
Since this 'announcement' mainstream media has been in a dithering frenzy. Commentaries abound with great anticipation. So?
ABC and CBS News and we suppose other major media outlets have been reporting this 'news' 4 times an hour since the announcement from Tiger's camp.
Why?
Why is Tiger Woods lead 'news' at all?
Now, we don't want to take the wind out of the sails of the major media and what they will report. And certainly we don't want to up stage Tiger himself. But this is exactly what The Tiger will say..... he will be contrite and say he is sorry for 'letting down' HIS FANS.....he will say he's been in rehabilitation and will try to put his life back together with his family. He will ask for forgiveness and make some kind of a vow to be all that he can be as a role model for HIS FANS.
So be it.
The issue we see with all of this is exactly what this blog is all about. Does anyone really care about Tiger Woods and his marital issues and so-called sex addictions?
When our country and this world has so many real issues to confront, why does mainstream media choose to make any thing about Tiger Woods the BIG Story?
True. Tiger Woods is probably the greatest golfer of all time. So?
America and other first world countries seem to worship their celebrities. Sports stars, movie stars, religious icons, even some politicians are idolized for some mysterious reason.
Why do we not have celebrities in education, medicine, the sciences? There are many. But even with the sophisticated readership here, can you name just one in any of these disciplines? What percentage of the US population can grasp the meaning of the recent Supreme Court ruling relative to political campaign funding and donations from corporate and union powers?
Instead, we follow the Tiger Woods and Paris Hilton junk to the extent we tune out those issues that can bring a 1st world country into the 3rd world. Just drive down your streets and on the highways of this country and dodge the pot holes....still we need to get to a place where we can see Tiger Woods or some other innocuous icon dribble on about nothing that enlightens us about those important things relevant to our real world.
What do you think?
