"The 1,000 Yard Stare" - A War Term Personified (Photo)

"The 1,000 Yard Stare"
titles this image of an American
soldier that can be seen in several
national military museums.
"The 1,000 Yard Stare" is a
term coined in WWII, and describes
the countenance witnessed on the faces
of some men returning from their
prolonged experiences in heavy
combat zones.
This photo of an unnamed soldier
was taken shortly after he returned
from 48-hours without sleep in the
Battle of Eniwetok in 1944.
